A king single in New Zealand is 105 x 202 cm. It is wider and longer than a standard single, which is why it has become the go-to bed for teenagers, tall solo sleepers and anyone moving out of a single bed for good. King single mattresses at Cambridge Beds & Furniture start from $299, and king single mattress and base sets start from $549.
Is a king single worth it over a single?
For most growing kids, yes. The extra 14 cm of width and 11 cm of length make a real difference once a child hits their teens, and a king single can last right through to adulthood. It is also the size most parents choose if they only want to buy one "grown-up" bed. The trade-off is floor space: allow a room of at least about 2.7 x 3 m to keep space around the bed.
How does a king single compare with other sizes?
- Single: 91 x 191 cm, $249
- King single: 105 x 202 cm, $299
- Double: 139 x 191 cm, $349
A king single is longer than a double, so taller teens are often better off in a king single than a double.
What is the best king single mattress for a teenager?
Teenagers grow fast and often sleep in odd positions, so a medium feel with pocket springs tends to suit them. Good mid-range options in our range include SleepTime Medium, the Dreamland Liverpool and Newcastle ranges, and Posture Flex for teens who prefer a firmer feel. For guest rooms, the SleepTime Kyro Bonnell keeps costs down.
King single bunk beds and frames
Several of our bunk beds are built for king single mattresses, including the Nautica, Tyler and New England bunks, which suits families with two teens in one room. You'll also find king single frames in our bed frames range, and the Snooze pop-up set pairs a king single bed with a pull-out trundle for sleepovers.
