Choosing a bed for a child comes down to three things: their age, how much room you have, and whether they share a bedroom. What bed is right for my child's age?
- About 2 to 4: A single bed, First "big bed" after the cot, easy to climb into
- About 4 to 6: Single, or the bottom bunk, Top bunks aren't recommended for under-sixes
- 6 and up: Bunk beds or a single, Safe age for the top bunk with guard rails
- Teens: King single, Longer and wider for growing teenagers

King single bunks give each child a 105 x 202 cm bed, so they won't outgrow it by high school.
How do I make a kids' bedroom safe?
- Use guard rails on the top bunk and the correct mattress thickness. The Tyler, for example, needs at least 260 mm between the mattress top and the top of the rail.
- Keep bunks away from windows, blind cords and ceiling fans.
- Fix tallboys and bookcases to the wall.
- Choose a supportive medium mattress rather than thin foam.
Sleepovers without a second bed
The Snooze Pop-up Set ($1,199) is a king single bed with a pop-up trundle and two mattresses included, so there's a spare bed that tucks away during the day.
