Buying a Bed in NZ: Marketplace or Garage Sale vs Showroom, What You Actually Get

Buying a Bed in NZ: Marketplace or Garage Sale vs Showroom, What You Actually Get

By the Cambridge Beds & Furniture team, 199 Thames Street, Morrinsville. Updated September 2026.

A bed or lounge advertised from someone's garage or on a marketplace page often looks cheaper than the same kind of product in a showroom. Sometimes it is, at the checkout. But the price on the tag is only part of what you pay for. Quality, warranty, delivery and someone to call when something goes wrong all sit behind it. This guide compares the two ways of buying so you can choose wisely.

Is it really cheaper to buy a bed from a private seller?

The listing price is often lower, but the gap is smaller than most people expect once you compare like for like. A showroom bed comes with a known brand, a warranty and a way to fix problems. A garage-sale bed often comes with none of these. We regularly run sales, and a mattress like the SleepTime Medium has been priced from $999, down from $1,249. Compare that with the risk of buying a bed you can't test and can't return, and the saving often disappears.

What is different about buying in store?

Private seller / garage sale Showroom
Brand and build Often unbranded or unknown Known brands and NZ-made options
Try before you buy Rarely Lie on it, sit on it, compare side by side
Warranty Usually none Manufacturer warranty on the product
Comfort trial Usually none 60-night comfort guarantee on eligible mattresses
Delivery and assembly You collect and carry it Delivery and optional assembly
Payment options Cash or bank transfer Afterpay, GEM Visa, Finance Now, Q Mastercard
Help if something goes wrong Limited or none A local team to call

What does a comfort guarantee give you?

A mattress can feel fine for five minutes in a showroom and wrong after a week at home. That is why a trial period matters. Our 60-night comfort guarantee gives you time to sleep on your choice. You don't get that from a bed sold as seen from a garage.

What happens if the bed is faulty?

With a store purchase, you have a business to go back to. Our warranty information page explains how cover works, and you can raise a problem through the service call process. With a private sale, your options are far narrower. We explain the legal difference in our guide to your rights when buying furniture in NZ.

What about the cost of getting it home?

A big bed or lounge suite won't fit in most cars. Hiring a trailer, finding a second person and carrying it up stairs all add cost and risk. With us, delivery and assembly are part of the service,.

Can I spread the cost instead of buying cheap?

Yes. If the reason for going cheap is the upfront cost, look at our finance options first. We offer four ways to pay over time:

  • Afterpay: split your purchase into four equal payments, due every two weeks, with no added interest when you pay on time. A good fit for smaller items such as a mattress or bedside table.
  • GEM Visa: a revolving credit card accepted in store, useful for larger purchases now and in the future.
  • Finance Now: a New Zealand-owned option with flexible repayment terms. Ask our team about current interest-free periods and eligibility.
  • Q Mastercard: a flexible credit card you can use for your purchase with us and for everyday spending elsewhere.

Most applications are approved on the spot in store or within minutes online. Terms, credit criteria and interest-free periods are set by each provider and can change, so our team will talk you through what is available when you visit.

Splitting a quality purchase can cost less over time than replacing a poor one in a year or two. Our guide on whether furniture stores really are more expensive looks at the numbers in more detail.

Should I never buy from a private seller?

Not never. A nearly new item from someone you trust can be fine. Just go in with clear eyes: check the condition in person, ask for the receipt, and know you will have little recourse afterwards. For a mattress, which you will use for a third of your life, the hygiene and support risks are bigger than for most furniture.

Choose your purchase wisely

Price matters, but so do the years of use you get from it. Visit our showroom at 199 Thames Street, Morrinsville, open seven days (Mon to Fri 9am to 5pm, Sat 10am to 5pm, Sun 10am to 3pm). Call 027 823 4445 and we'll check a specific product is on the floor.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to buy a bed from Facebook Marketplace or a garage sale?

The advertised price can be lower, but you usually get no warranty, no trial period and no delivery. Once you compare like for like, the real saving is often much smaller than it looks.

What do I get when I buy a bed in store that I don't get privately?

You get a known brand, the chance to test it, a manufacturer warranty, a comfort guarantee on eligible mattresses, delivery options and a local team to help if there is a problem.

Are showroom beds much more expensive?

Not always. With regular sales, finance options and entry-level ranges, prices are often closer to private listings than people expect.

Is it safe to buy a second-hand mattress?

It carries risks around hygiene, sagging and hidden damage, and you can't return it if it doesn't suit. Buying new is the safer choice for a mattress.
